It would seem quite obvious that bodybuilding and being a vegetarian just do not mix. While there may have been a point in history where these two concepts work hand in hand, the nature of each seem to present some conflicting ideologies.

At least that’s what some may think.

The thing is, in our modern civilization, there seems to be a solution for almost everything. In fact, we see an increasing number of individuals who decide on becoming a vegetarian. Quite surprisingly, some of them include athletes and bodybuilders.

How is it possible when vegetables seem unable to offset the necessary protein needed by bodybuilders? It is not a secret that consuming a huge amount of protein is essential to the success of bodybuilding. It is also common knowledge that such an amount of protein means that a bodybuilder has to consume a diet of mostly meat.

Tips to Consider

Rather than quickly dismissing this as something impossible, there are actually some tips that can be taken into consideration. One thing that you need to remember is to ensure you eat the correct amount of calories. This can be done by making sure that you accurately track the overall amount of calories you consume. Since vegetables and fruits have relatively fewer calories compared to meat, it would be helpful to increase the amount of food eaten.

Eating in quantity is not enough. Make sure that you also consume quality calories. This can be done making sure that you limit your consumption of processed and refined foods. You can turn your attention to legumes and chickpeas instead. In fact, this is one of the main sources of protein for most vegetarians.

Egg whites are also a good source of protein. They can be prepared in a variety of ways, such as being included in baking, shakes and other aspects of food. Also, instead of eating rice, you can eat quinoa. This food is similar in components to rice, with the extra benefit of more protein. Nuts can also serve as your snacks, as they do not just entertain you, but also give you the protein that your body needs.

Monitor Your Activity Level

Make sure that you also monitor your activity level. As with other sports, such as enjoying golf, bodybuilding requires proper monitoring, not just of your health, but your food consumption as well. Therefore, there is no need to give up being a vegetarian if you want to engage in bodybuilding.

Again, the secret is just consuming the right amount of calories and protein that you would need to improve muscle mass. You may even want to invest in some BCAAs, as they can help in maintaining muscle mass while preventing loss. Consuming essential fatty acids is another solution, especially increasing your intake of Omega-3s, as well as others.

Indeed, being a successful bodybuilder while maintaining your goal to stay a vegetarian is possible. You just need to work even harder in order to keep your nutrition and protein intake  in order.
